At Bomberg Chiropractic, we care about the safety and well-being of commercial motor vehicle drivers. Therefore, in accordance with the Minnesota DOT and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), we now conduct DOT medical exams for all licensed individuals. We are a fully licensed medical examiner listed on the FMCSA National Registry.
If you need a DOT exam, contact our chiropractic clinic today at 763.450.1755 to schedule a medical evaluation.
Do You Need a DOT Exam?
If you operate a commercial vehicle that weighs greater than 10,000 pounds (gross), and you use the vehicle for interstate commerce, then you are required to undergo a physical exam and receive a DOT medical certification card.
You can only acquire this card from a DOT physician that is on the approved medical examiner list. Bomberg Chiropractic is an approved DOT provider.
DOT Medical Exam & Commercial Motor Vehicle Certification
According to the FMCSA, a licensed medical examiner must provide you with a full physical examination that is valid for up to 24 months. If we feel the need to monitor a current medical condition you may have, we may also issue a certificate for less than 24 months.
Otherwise, if we feel you are physically qualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), we will provide you with a copy of the examination results, as well as an official Medical Examiner’s Certification. The certificate allows you to drive professionally on the road.
What Can You Expect During the DOT Exam?
When you arrive at Bomberg Chiropractic, you will present your certification form to one of our medical examiners. Make sure you fill out the portion at the top of the page. The examination may include the following:
- Blood pressure & pulse check
- Vision test including eye dilation, movement, and macular degeneration
- Hearing test including abnormalities or eardrum punctures
- Complete organ evaluation (heart, lungs, abdomen, liver)
- Complete system evaluation (digestive, circulatory, etc.)
- Spinal, neck, and joint exam
- Urine sample used for medical conditions and drug testing (if mandated by your employer)
Our exam will also be used to identify any pre-existing or current medical conditions you may have that were previously undetected.
What do We Look For Specifically?
During an examination, we look for physical or health conditions that could impair your ability to operate a commercial vehicle on the road. Conditions we assess include:
- Mental stability
- Blood pressure
- Sleep Apnea
- Alcohol or drug-related medical issues
- Stroke likelihood
- Chronic joint, muscle, or organ pain
- Brain injuries or other neurological issues
- Epilepsy or seizures
- Heart disease
- Respiratory issues
What Can You Expect After the DOT Exam?
Once you pass the DOT exam, we will complete the Medical Examiner’s Certificate and provide you with a copy. We will also send your official Medical Examination Report for Commercial Driver Fitness Determination to the Commercial Driver’s License Information System (CDLIS), as well as other relevant documents.
Your certification is valid for up to 24 months or the time-frame that we recommend if it is less than 24 months. For instance, you may have a condition that requires us to examine you again in 12 months. If so, we will specify your condition and why you’ll need a further examination in less than 24 months.
