At Bomberg Chiropractic, we treat patients in the Twin Cities metro with similar ailments. Usually, their pain stems from the same two regions: their lower back and tension in their neck and shoulders. After thorough research on our part, we discovered that many of these patients have one thing in common: they have a job where they sit or stand for the majority of the day.

What Happens When You Sit All Day?

When you sit for eight hours or more at your job, it wears on your back and joints in certain areas. Without frequent movement, muscles may begin to deteriorate or lose mass. Sitting for too long can strain or pinch nerves, or even cause spasms if it’s severe enough. Without realizing it, you may frequently slouch, which puts pressure on your spine. Additionally, sitting in the same position every day with very little movement causes the lumbar discs to crunch together, creating pain.

What Happens When You Stand All Day?

When you have a hands-on job or a job that involves frequent standing, such as teaching, it’s important to pay attention to your body. Standing for too long can put immense pressure on your lower limbs and lower back. Standing relatively still for long stretches has been proven to reduce blood flow and is a major contributor to cardiovascular disease over years of the same activities.

Small Things you Can Do To Help Yourself

Standing or sitting all day can cause your body to ache. There are quite a few simple things you can do to keep yourself active while sitting or standing at your desk.

●        Re-situate yourself every 15-20 minutes. Shifting positions every once in a while can go a long way in making sure you’re comfortable throughout the day.

●        Get up and walk a lap every once in a while. Getting up to walk gets the blood flowing and allows you to stretch.

●        Do arm and leg extensions. Extending and moving your extremities may not seem like much, but it can go a long way toward reducing tension in your body

●        Do small dance moves. Small dance moves, such as sidestepping, pelvic lifts, and core up downs can get the blood flowing, which can reduce pain and tension.
