Wouldn’t it be great if your body felt amazing all the time? Unfortunately, that’s not how the human body works. While our bodies are certainly amazing creations, they’re also surprisingly prone to dysfunction—even if you practice healthy habits like eating right, exercising, stretching, and getting plenty of movement throughout your day.

Here’s the good news: You can help yourself out on your quest to feel amazing with routine chiropractic care. At Bomberg Chiropractic, we stress the importance of ongoing, maintenance care because we know how beneficial it can be for your entire body. Curious why you need regular chiropractic treatments and what they can do for your body (even if you’re not in pain)? Let’s take a look!

Spinal Misalignment: What is It? How Does It Happen?

Spinal misalignments, known in the chiropractic world as subluxations, occur when spinal vertebrae move out of their normal positioning, or alignment. Subluxations have a variety of causes, ranging from everyday movements involving force, to injuries, to even chemical imbalances within the body.

Essentially, any time your body endures significant force—whether physical, emotional, or chemical—your musculoskeletal system reacts to the change. And, while physical force can obviously knock your vertebrae out of alignment, other forces can be just as physically detrimental.

Your body reacts to both chemical forces (vitamins, minerals, neurotransmitters, etc.) and emotional forces (stress, anger, etc.) in interesting ways. These reactions might entail painful muscle spasms—as is sometimes the case with mineral deficiencies—or increasing muscle tension due to chronic stress.

When your muscles react to these non-physical stimuli by contracting or gradually developing chronic tension, they slowly pull your spine out of its natural alignment. What happens as a result? Let’s just say nothing good comes of it—more on that next.

How Does Misalignment Affect Your Body?

Unfortunately, spinal misalignment affects far more than just your spine—it can affect your entire body, too. When the bones of your spine move out of alignment, they put pressure on the nerves that stem from your spinal cord. And, since the spinal cord connects your peripheral nerves with your brain, that nerve compression can trigger acute or chronic health issues, including:

●        Poor nerve signaling to organs, extremities, etc.

●        Pain, tingling, or burning sensations in the extremities

●        Decreased systemic functioning, depending on the location and severity of subluxations

●        Chronic headaches

●        Inflammation, either acute or chronic

Beyond nerve compression, spinal misalignment also takes a toll on your joints and muscles, often resulting in symptoms such as:

●        Reduced range of motion

●        Limited mobility

●        Spinal disc deterioration or herniation

●        Joint deterioration and arthritis

●        Muscular imbalances

●        Poor posture

Keep in mind the consequences of spinal misalignment are many, and the above list is by no means exhaustive. And, unfortunately, there’s really no way to avoid spinal misalignments—they just occur as part of everyday life. But don’t go resigning yourself to a lifetime of discomfort and poor functioning just yet!

Here’s the good news: Routine chiropractic wellness treatments are highly effective at bringing the spine and body back into proper alignment and restoring or maintaining normal function. BUT, you must be diligent about sticking to your care plan, if you’re looking for long-term spine health.

Routine, Chiropractic Wellness Treatments Restore Your Body’s Balance

You see your dentist every six months to maintain your oral health, right? Your spine health should be no different. In fact, we’d venture to say it’s MORE important since your brain and spinal cord essentially control every function your body performs. Just as neglecting routine dental care results in oral deterioration, neglecting routine spinal care results in spinal decline—there’s simply no way around it.

What if you have no pain? Should you still see a chiropractor for ongoing care?

In a word, absolutely. Lack of pain doesn’t necessarily mean you’re perfectly healthy. Pain is only a symptom of an underlying problem, which, more than likely, has progressed far beyond where it would have had you maintained a routine schedule of ongoing spinal care. Even if you have no pain currently, it will still behoove you to have your spine checked regularly so we can correct minor issues before they become glaring problems.

What Does Routine Chiropractic Care Entail?

When you come in for a consultation, Dr. Bomberg will first perform a comprehensive physical evaluation along with a health history to determine the root cause of the problem. After explaining the findings to you in detail, he’ll then formulate a custom treatment plan depending on your unique physiology.

If you’re in the midst of dealing with a debilitating issue, you’ll likely require more frequent care to bring your body back into proper alignment and relieve associated symptoms. Your plan may entail multiple visits per week until the root cause of the problem resolves, after which you’ll move into a less frequent schedule of care.

Ongoing maintenance chiropractic care allows the doctor to evaluate your spine on a regular basis for any signs of abnormal structural shifts. He’ll then perform any required adjustments to ensure your body remains in proper alignment and continues to function normally.

Depending on the condition, some individuals may benefit from visiting a chiropractor once per week, while others do best with bi-weekly or monthly chiropractic care. Your individual frequency of care always depends on your unique physiology, your lifestyle habits, how your body responds to treatment, and how well you maintain each adjustment.

Bottom line? Routine chiropractic care isn’t just for people who’ve suffered injuries or deal with chronic pain. Maintaining a healthy spine is critical if you hope to maintain overall well-being, and one of the best ways to do that is to visit your chiropractor regularly!
